Reason: To recognize the Scouts earning their Religious Emblems in year 2002

A tradition that has grown through the years is the event listed above. The CCS has sponsored this event yearly for Scout Month as a way to recognize the Scouts that have earned their religious emblem. The ceremony was moved to the last Saturday in January to provide local churches a chance to schedule their own Scout Sunday ceremony during February.
Youth of all faiths are invited to participate and be recognized. The number of scouts earning their emblems during year 2002 is 473.

The National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) recognizes Catholic sponsored units that fulfill certain requirements with the Paul VI award. This award is a Quality Unit Award with the additional requirements of scouts working or earning their religious emblem.
 
This year, there are nine (9) units that qualified for the award. The units are:
Pack 13 (Mission San Juan Capistrano)
Pack 68 (St. Catherine, Laguna Beach)
Pack 227 (St. Bonaventure, Huntington Beach)
Pack 230 (St. Columban, Garden Grove)
Pack 660 (St. Irenaeus, Cypress)
Pack 811 (St. Angela Merici, Brea)
Pack 833 (Our Lady of Guadalupe, LaHabra)
Troop 833 (Our Lady of Guadalupe, LaHabra)
Pack 818 (Serra Catholic School)
These will be presented at the recognition ceremony.

Bishop's Awards of Excellence

Part of the Scout Saturday ceremony is the presentation of the Bishop's Unit Award of Excellence and the Bishop's Our Lady of Guadalupe Award.

The Award of Excellence recognizes the unit having an outstanding religious emblem program for all their Youth and receiving the highest percentage of recipients.  This year?s recipient was Pack 660 of St. Irenaeus in Cypress.

The Bishop?s Youth Award is the Our Lady of Guadalupe Award.  The emblem is named for the patron of the Diocese.  To be eligible, the candidate must have earned the Parvuli Dei, Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII and Eagle Scout awards prior his 18th birthday.  He must have given outstanding example in his scouting activities, school activities, and service to others.  He is to have assisted other youth in earning their religious emblems.  This years recipient is Andrius Andy Mazeika of Troop 603 of Mission Viejo
